I purchased a home and the sellers generously left some furniture. My new home and the furniture looked fine but I wanted to freshen things. I had the carpet in 2 rooms, the stairs, a recliner and a sofa steam cleaned.
They were on time and had a professional demeanor, however, I was charged more than 50% over the quoted price. I was disappointed that the carpet and sofa didn't clean up as I expected. Once the carpet dried, it was stiff and crunchy and the traffic pattern was still very obvious. The sofa still had noticeable stains.
After considering my options, I rented a Rug Doctor steam cleaner. I just used hot water with a very small amount of Dawn dish soap. I was shocked by the amount of dirt in the water after the first pass. I then went over the 2 rooms with just hot water for the second pass.
The carpet cleaned up beautifully. It was soft and the crunch was gone. The traffic pattern was barely noticeable. I took a shot at cleaning the sofa. What a surprise, it too cleaned up beautifully. I should have saved the money and done it myself.
